In 1997 the Gdansk Port celebrated 1000th Anniversary of its existence.
It is a universal port. Its geographical location makes it a convenient transit point.

Port Gdansk consists of two divisions:
-inner port - located at the mouth of the river Wisla, able to service vessels of draught up to 10.2 m.
-outer port called Port Polnocny able to handle vessels of draught up to 15 m.

Waterways, port areas and port development programs are administrated by the Port Authority of Gdansk.
Transshipment-Storage Companies Ltd. are responsible for transshipment, handling and storage of cargo in all port areas. Port Gdansk Exploatation Ltd. is responsible for co-ordination in trade and operations.

Port Gdansk offers for cargoes:
-import-export transshipment services, storage, handling, quality and quanity control, grading, marking;
-sampling, repacking, forwarding and port services;

Port Gdansk offers for vessels:
-towage, mooring, water supply, electricity supply,
-delivery of stevedoring materials.

Port Gdansk owns specialised transshipment bases for:
-containers and ro/ro vessels,
-coal and fuel,
-phosphorites,
-sulphur,
-salt and soda,
-bulk,
-wood and wood pulp.

The Port is equipped with a large number of tugs allowing for safe entry of vessels into port and keeping navigability even in winter conditions.
