Gdynia is one of Poland's three major sea ports and specializes in the handling of general cargo goods. Bulk cargoes were to a large extent taken over by Gdansk and Szczecin.
Another cargo of significance in the port's overall turnover is grain. The terminal serves the biggest ships that can enter the Baltic Sea, at a rate of 6000 tonnes per 24 hours. The total capacity for grain exceeds 4 million tonnes per year. It is sufficient to handle Polish grain imports/exports and that of the country's transit partners.

Gdynia is also the most important Polish passenger port. Yet the experience and tradition of passenger traffic in Gdynia destine it to play a major role on the international tourist market.
