The town of Swinoujscie is located in Poland's north-western corner at the mouth of the Swina River to Baltic Sea (the town's name in Polish means "the outlet of the Swina"). Swinoujscie is situated on islands Uznam, Wolin and Karsibor. The population is 50,000.
The port was established there in 1729; the town began developing as a busy sea-worthy port and in the 19th century it became a fashionable spa and a bathing resort.
Tourism is mostly located on the Uznam island where the town's centre lies, while industrial functions are concentrated on the western edge of the Wolin island.
The port of Swinoujscie, operating as one of the port complex Szczecin-Swinoujscie provides port services: handling of dry bulk and general cargo (especially coal, ore and chemical materials), as well as towage and moorage of ships. Ferry terminal operated by Polska Zegluga Baltycka (Polish Baltic Shipping Company) provides ferry berths and facilities for passenger services. Swinoujscie's location has allowed ferry connections to with Sweden and Denmark. There are lines to Malmoe in Sweden, Copenhagen and Ronne (Bornholm) in Denmark.
The next significant contributions to the town's economic development are deep-sea fishing and the fish processing as well as ship repair services.
